Ceanothus papillosus Torr. & Gray Wartleaf Ceanothus A tall dense shrub with finely hairy shoots, glandular toothed leaves and deep blue flowers, native of California, from San Mateo to San Luis Obispo Co., growing in Redwood forests and chaparral in the Coast Ranges, below 1000m, flowering in April-May. Stems 1-5m, Leaves oblong-elliptical, rounded at apex, 1-veined, glandular-hairy above, with fine glandular teeth, 1.5-5 x 1-2cm. Flowers small, in stalked elongated clusters to 5cm long. For a sheltered position, cool in summer. Min. -5°C. Var. roweanus McMinn. from dryer hills south to Orange Co., has narrow leaves to 1cm wide, with a blunt apex. Origionally discovered by David Douglas in 1832. |
