Calliandra eriophylla Benth. Fairy Duster, Mock Mesquite or Mesquitella A low, spreading shrub with small pinnate leaves and rose-pink to purplish-pink flowers in solitary heads with long stamens, native of S. California to W. Texas, and N Mexico, in Baja California growing in desert scrub in sandy washes and gullies, usually below 1500m, flowering in February-March. Shrub to 1.2m high; leaves with 2-4 pairs of pinnae. Stamens 1.5-2cm long. Pods 5-7cm silvery with a red edge. For desert conditions or dry, well-drained soil. Min. -3°C. |
