Calliandra californica Benth. Fairy Duster A low, spreading shrub with pinnate leaves and bright crimson flowers in solitary heads with long stamens, native of N Mexico, in Baja California growing in desert scrub, usually below 1500m, flowering in much of the year. Shrub to 1m high; leaves with 6-9 pairs of pinnae. Stamens 1.5-2cm long. Similar to C. eriophylla, but with larger leaves. In gardens in Palm Springs, the flowers of this species are much visited by hummingbirds. Cultivation Good in dry sandy soil in a desert garden, but a small amount of water in summer will keep it flowering longer. Height and spread to 1m (3ft). USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
