Caesalpinia decapetala (Roth.) Alston, (syn. C. sepiaria Roxb.) (Leguminosae) Native of the Himalayas from Pakistan to China, Japan (var. japonica) and S.E. Asia, scrambling in scrub, on rocky slopes and in gorges, at up to 2200 m, flowering in March-May. Deciduous, partly climbing shrub to 7 m (or 2 m in var. japonica); branches with backward curving prickles. Leaves to 38 cm long, doubly pinnate with 5-l0 pinnae, each with 8-12 pairs of leaflets. Flowers in upright racemes to 40 cm, each 2-3 cm across, in early summer. Hardy to -10°C. |
