Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) Carr. Atlas Cedar; African Cedar; Atlantic Cedar; Mount Atlas Cedar; Silvery Cedar. Found in the Atlas Mountains in Algeria and Morocco. Most wild trees have green leaves 2–3cm (3⁄4–11⁄4in) long, in clusters of 10–50 on spur shoots. Most commonly cultivated is the blue form, Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca’, the blue Atlas cedar. They make huge trees, pyramidal when young, but later becoming rounded, with layered, blue-green branches set with rounded, pale brown cones. Cultivation Needs well-drained soil. Height to 40m (130ft); spread to 15m (50ft). USZ 7–11, surviving -10°C (14°F) of overnight frost. Survives summer drought. |
