Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach A native to western N. America, from Alaska to Oregon, yielding a valuable fragrant timber. Cultivated for ornament in western States and western and central Europe. Height to 36m (120ft). Male flowers shed pollen in March and are yellow rather than red as on C. lawsoniana. Female flowers which open at the same time are produced on upper branches. Cones are about 1.2cm (½in) across, with 4 or 6 spiked scales ripening in the autumn of their second year to red brown and opening to release seeds. Foliage does not have white marks on underside and has a rough texture since the leaf tips are usually not pressed against the twigs as seen in cone photograph. When crushed the leaves have a pungent Catty smell.
