Cistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae) Gum Cistus Native of S. France, Spain, Portugal and N. Africa, growing on dry, usually granite hills at up to 1000 m, flowering in April-June. This evergreen shrub has aromatic, very sticky branches and smooth, tongue-shaped, dark green leaves, which are white and downy on the underside. The single white flowers, 10cm (4in) across, often have purple blotches at the base of the petals. Ovary 10-celled. Cultivation Grow in well-drained soil in full sun. Height to 2m (6½ft); spread 1m (3ft) or more. USZ 9–11, surviving at least -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
