Cornus controversa Hemsl. Native of all Japan, Korea and China west to Yunnan, in woods, scrub and hedges in the mountains at up to 2000 m in W. China, flowering in May-June. Large, deciduous shrub or tree to 16 m, with an upright trunk and layers of horizontal branches. Leaves alternate, to 12 cm long. 'Variegata' was introduced by Barbier in France in 1896. Hardy to -20°C.
