x Cupressocyparis leylandii (Dallim. & Jacks.) Dallim., family Cupressaceae Leyland Cypress A hybrid between Nootka Cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) and Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa). Mainly planted as ornamentals in gardens, or as hedging. Height to about 30m (100ft) so far. Male and female flowers are on the same tree. Males appear in the autumn and open to shed pollen the following March. Females, small and green, develop into shiny cones about 1-2cm (½-¾in) across. A large number of clones now exist. The two most important are:
x C. leylandii cv. 'Haggerston Grey' (clone 2) has blue grey foliage, and the branchlets are set at all angles round the brown woody twigs.
x C.leylandii cv. 'Leighron Green' (clone ll) has stouter green shoots, and branchlets from woody twigs in one plane.
