Daphne sericea Vahl. (syn. D. collina Dickson) Native of Italy, Sicily, Crete, W. and S. Turkey, Syria and the Caucasus, growing in open rocky scrub in maquis and in pine woods, often on limestone, from sea level to 1800 m, flowering in April and May and occasionally again in autumn in cultivation. It makes a rounded or upright shrub up to 1.1 m high, suckers emerging at least 2 m from the parent plant have been noted in Turkey. Flowers well-scented. Hardiness very variable; the horticultural form D. collina is reported to be very hardy; more recent introductions very tender. Hardy to -10°C or -15°C. Photograph: Daphne sericea f. alba
