Daphne retusa Hems. (Thymelaeaceae) Native of Bhutan and S.E. Xizang, to Yunnan, Sichuan and Gansu. It grows on rocky mountainsides, among scrub and in open pine forest from 3000-4500 m, flowering in May-July. It makes a slow-growing bush, up to 1.2 m, with sweetly scented flowers. In cultivation it slowly reaches 1 m, is tolerant of a wide range of soil, provided that it is humus-rich and well-drained, often flowering in autumn as well as in spring. Sun. Hardy to -20°C.
