Daphne odora Thunb. Native of China, and long-cultivated so that its native range is uncertain, but recorded wild in Chekiang, Hupeh and Sichuan, at around 1000 m. An evergreen shrub up to 1 m high and across, with very sweetly scented flowers produced in winter. The commonest form in cultivation today is 'Aureomarginata' (syn. 'Marginata') in which the leaves are edged with a narrow yellow line, and the flowers are pale inside, purplish-pink outside. It is hardier than the plain-leaved forms, doing well outdoors in London. There is also a white form in cultivation. Hardy to -10°C. |
