Daphne mezereum L. (Thymelaeaeeae) Mezereon Native of Europe from Norway and England to Spain and eastwards to Turkey, Russia and Siberia, growing in woods, scrub and on limestone screes at up to 2600 m, flowering in early spring. A deciduous shrub up to 1.5 m, with many upright stems. Easily grown in sun or light shade. The beautiful red berries are very poisonous. Hardy to -30°C. Daphne mezereum f. alba (Weston) Schelle White-flowered forms, with yellow or amber fruit, occur wild and are frequently cultivated. They apparently come true from seed. |
