Daphne jezoensis Maxim. ex Regel (syn. D. kamtschatica var. jezoensis (Maxim.) Ohwi) Native of Japan in Hokkaido and N.W. Honshu, growing in woods usually under deciduous trees, and in southern Sakkalin, flowering in February-May. Flowers (usually those of deeper colour) often scented. In cultivation a small shrub up to 0.5 m, but up to 1 m in the wild. It requires woodland conditions in leafy soil with good drainage. Often semi-evergreen and late autumn or winter flowering in cultivation in England. Hardy to -15°C.
