Eucryphia cordifolia Cav. Native of central Chile where it grows in cool rain forests at low altitudes, growing into a substantial evergreen tree up to 20 m tall. In cultivation the largest trees approach this size but it is more often seen as a large shrub or small tree of 8-10 m. The leaves are invariably simple and entire, except on young plants. Introduced in 1851, it has proved to be quite tolerant of chalky soils but it only really thrives in cool moist maritime climates.
Cultivation Needs damp peaty soil. Tolerates limestone if the rainfall is high.
Height to 20m (65ft); spread to 6m (20ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of frost. Needs ample summer water.
