Echinopsis tarijensis This beautiful cactus is found on high passes in northern Argentina and Bolivia, growing on steep rocky slopes at around 3,600m (12,000ft). The little-branched stems, 40cm (16in) in diameter, are columnar with around 25 ribs, soft spines, and dense white hairs. The upright, bell-shaped, pinkish or red flowers, around 10cm (4in) across, appear in summer.
Cultivation Needs well-drained, deep, sandy soil, with a little rain, in summer.
Height to 5m (16ft); spread to 40cm (16in). USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought.
